Né en 1943 dans le Michigan, Pete Dexter a été journaliste d'investigation, chroniqueur et éditorialiste pour le Sun Sentinel de Fort Lauderdale et le Daily News de Philadelphie avant de se consacrer à l’écriture. Il signe des romans noirs dans la grande tradition de Hammett, Cain, Jerome Charyn, Himes ou encore McBain.

Son troisième roman, Cotton Point, a obtenu le National Book Award en 1988 et a inspiré au réalisateur Stephen Gyllenhaal le film Rage. En 2012, son roman Paperboy a été porté à l'écran par Lee Daniels.
